Teoh Yun's Individual Reflection

(I) Plenary Sessions [Day 1 - complete this section]

(A) My key learning points from each session...
1.    Importance of Water - Dirty and Clean
I learnt that poor sanitation causes cholera, typhoid fever, dysentery which might be quite dangerous to people such as young children and elderly. Pollution will often cause a bad and unpleasant smell, infectious diseases that causes chronic health risks. Besides, all human beings need clean water thus, water is a necessity Thus, it is also very important for social and economy development. Water reclamation and desalination via membrane structures is able to "purify" water enough for humans to consume, however, it is often mix with reservoirs' water since after purification, some of the minerals that our body needs is removed. Energy can also be produced via hydroelectric plants.

2.    Revolution of Microelectronics Technology
I learnt about BRAINWAVE. (Bio, Radio, Auto, Info, Nano, Water, Audio, Video, Energy) I also learnt about how electrical appliances looked like in the past, how it evolved, how it was make. It was very interesting to know that the huge computer that weighed over a ton turned into slim laptops that can be very portable and useful. The word Bio Nanoelectronics actually came from the word electronics and biology, with the term electronics scaled down while the term of "biology" being scaled up, thus the name of bio nanoelectronics.

3.    Biomedical Engineering & Technology
I learnt that when things are of a smaller size for a fix volume, they will have a larger surface area. Thus, when mercury is separated into small drops, they are very unstable and vibrate, when they come into contact with each other particles, they would join and form a bigger particle.

4.    IT for Animation by Prof Seah Hock Soon
I learnt that there are two different types of animation, Stop animation and 2D/3D animations. For 2D animations, it takes a long time to make and an example of it is Japan's anime, Sailor Moon. They still use frame to frame animation. It requires a lot of manpower as the frames are all drawn and colored. As compared to that, movies that are 3D animation actually takes lesser time and manpower! Thus it is cheaper. Maths in animation would include geometric modelling which narrows down to Linear Algebra and calculus.

5.    Disappearing glaciers, rising sea levels, and why gravity is even more important than you think
I learnt that actually sea-level rise is not the same everywhere! It is due to "self attraction and loading" and when before glaciers melt, due to gravity, they are heavy and "weigh the ground down", and when they melt, it will seem as if water level has rised by a lot but in fact, it is also due to the ground "changing height" and it is also partially because of water being attracted to glacier due to gravitational pull. However, the reason we cannot measure how fast the sea level will rise is because we are unable to measure ALL the glaciers over the world and measure how fast they melt.

(B) Deepest impression...
{Suggested text} The plenary session that leaves the deepest impression on me is Importance of Water - Dirty and Clean
What I like about it is the very engaging speaker and his funny speech! Despite being funny, i was still able to understand his speech about how important water is. In his speech, there is also a lot of information and statistics that made me realize how serious the situation was.

(II) My Personal Reflection [Day 3 - complete this section] {Suggested text}
1.    I choose this project because i wanted to try removing caffeine from beverages since it was something that i didn't try before and i am not very good in arts and hands on building, thus i choose this project. However,  i choose this project partly due to the large amounts of vacancies and friends' influence.

2.    My role in the group ...

3.    Challenges I/we encounter when working on this project in the last 2 days, is that during the  and how I/we overcome these challenges...

4.    Through this project, I/we discover...

5.    As an individual, how I have benefited from this programme...

6.    My aspiration....
